Thunder Bay IC&I Waste Diversion Leaders
2008 Municipal Green Awards Presented
The Zero Waste Action Team of Thunder Bay, Ontario
The ZERO WASTE ACTION TEAM (ZWATeam) is comprised of members of the commercial, industrial and institutional sector, advisors, community organizations and citizens working together since 1992 to eliminate waste, manage resources and promote local jobs and economic self-sufficiency. Ontarians produce almost a tonne of waste each a year; this is an unacceptable waste of precious land and resources. The goal of "Zero Waste" is to eliminate 100% of the waste presently being generated using Nature as a model. The ZWATeam has adopted 5Rs - Rethink, Refuse, Reduce Reuse and then Recycle.
In 2006. the Lake Superior Binational Program presented the ZWATeam with an Environmental Stewardship Award. In 2007, the City of Thunder Bay recognized the ZWATeam for "Exceptional Leadership and Dedication to Community Sustainability." In 2008, the ZWATeam was recognized for "Exceptional Performance and Dedication to improving the Great Lakes" for our Electronic Waste Pilot Project.
